What brings you here?

Choose one and we'll show you what's relevant.

The weight shows up before the work does.

In the first weeks you may not know how much is ahead. But you already feel the responsibility.

“What if I get something wrong?”

You may now be legally responsible for your loved one's money and property. Miss a deadline or pay the wrong bill first, and it can cost the estate, or you personally.

Know what's required, in order

Your steps for your exact situation in California, with legal deadlines, reminders and a note on when to bring in an attorney or CPA.

“I don't want this to divide us.”

Family members ask for updates. A relative abroad hears things secondhand. Without a clear record, honest decisions can look like favoritism.

Everyone sees the same facts

Heirs follow progress, decisions and every dollar in their own language. The record protects you as much as it informs them.

“I don't even know where to start.”

Probate, trust, affidavit, tax ID, creditor notices. Each search raises three new questions.

Your next three steps, today

Answer a few questions and leave with a clear starting point in minutes, before you pay anything.

“An attorney quoted a percentage of the estate.”

Full-service help can cost thousands. Doing it alone can take hundreds of hours over a year or more.

One flat price, paid once

Usually reimbursable from the estate, with attorney referrals when you really need one.

See what's ahead, and what to do first.

Answer three questions. You'll see which path your family is likely on, the full scope of the work, the deadlines that matter and your first three steps.

Questions families ask in the first two weeks

You're not the first to wonder about these. Here are short answers to the questions that come up most.

Can I pay for the funeral from my husband's account?

Sometimes, but the rules depend on how the account is titled. KinMatters flags which accounts are safe to use and what to keep receipts for.

The bank froze my mother's account. What do they need from me?

Usually certified death certificates plus a document proving your authority, like a certification of trust or court letters. Your checklist names the right one.

My late uncle's kids think I'm moving too slowly.

Much of the wait is legal waiting periods and institutions, not you. A shared timeline shows everyone why.

How do I find accounts I didn't know about?

Mail, tax returns and statements reveal most of them. KinMatters walks you through where to look, including California's unclaimed property search.

Do I have to sell the house right away?

Not usually. There are steps to protect it first: insurance, utilities and keeping it secure while the estate is settled.

Some of the family and assets are overseas.

You can record foreign accounts and property alongside everything else, and relatives abroad can follow along in their language.

      Questions

      Is KinMatters a law firm?

No. KinMatters is software that helps you organize and complete the administrative work of settling an estate. It doesn't give legal or tax advice. When your situation needs a professional, we'll help you find one.

Do I still need an attorney?

Many trust administrations and small estates are handled by families themselves, while contested estates, complex taxes or court hearings may need an attorney. KinMatters helps you see which situation you're in.

Is the next-steps tool really free?

Yes. You can see your path, deadlines and first steps without an account or payment. You only pay if you choose the full plan once it's available.

Who can see the estate information?

Only the people you invite. Heirs get view-only access by default, and you choose what each person can see.

What if the estate isn't in California?

Join anyway and tell us the state. We're adding states based on demand, and early sign-ups decide which come next.
